Study: The world’s most popular and consumed drink may reduce the risk of diabetes

The results show that drinking at least four cups of tea a day can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 17%, while those who drank one to three cups had only a 4% reduction.

Researchers say the reason for tea’s potential anti-diabetic effects may be due to its anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant compounds.

“Our results are impressive because they suggest that people can do something as simple as drinking four cups of tea a day to reduce their chances of developing type 2 diabetes,” said study lead author Chaeng Lee.

What further intrigued the researchers was that these associations were observed regardless of the type of tea the participants consumed and their gender.

Professor Li added: “While more research is needed to determine the exact dose and the mechanisms behind these observations, our results suggest that drinking tea is beneficial in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, but only at high doses (at least four cups). in a day”.

He continued: “It is possible that certain components of tea, such as polyphenols, can lower blood glucose levels, but sufficient amounts of these bioactive compounds may be required to be effective. This may also explain why there is no association between tea consumption. and type 2 diabetes in our cohort study because we did not look at increased tea consumption.”

The researchers noted that the study was observational, and therefore no definitive conclusion could be drawn on the health benefits of tea, and could only track associations and analyze existing data.

In addition, the researchers stated that they relied on subjective assessments of tea consumption. This means they cannot rule out the possibility that lifestyle and other psychological factors may have played a role.
