20 killed when a truck fell in a ditch in Pakistan

A pickup truck fell in a water-filled ditch in southern Pakistan flooded, killing 20 passengers – mostly women and children – and injuring 13 others during the night.

The accident occurred on a flood-weakened highway in Sindh province. The road had been paved in more points to drain the floodwaters, but despite the passing of the months it has still not been repaired.

Pakistan is struggling to recover from the floods record which killed more than 1,700 people and damaged roads and bridges.

Police officer Imran Qureshi said the truck was carrying passengers from Khairpur district to a famous Sufi shrine in Sehwan.

He added that 13 of the passengers were rescued and taken in a nearby hospital. Hospital officials said eight women and 10 children, aged between 10 and 15, were among the dead. They also said that two of the injured are in critical condition.

The southern province of Sindh has been hit hardest by the floods caused by unprecedented monsoon rains, exacerbated by climate change.

The disaster has affected 33 million people since mid-June, causing extensive damage to the country and destroying two million homes.

Even disastrous floods and floods in Pakistan, especially in Sindh, have swept via road connections.
