2019 Cup President: Tiger Woods Brings Me – Justin Thomas Welcomes Masterclass

MELBOURNE, Australia – United States captain Tiger Woods ran on a scintillating display and Justin Thomas had no illusions that inspired the pair to win the Presidents Cup.

Thomas took the back seat in the open-field match on Thursday, as Woods found six holes against Marc Leishman and Joaquin Niemann for 4 and 3 wins.

After flying his first two holes on Day 1 of the 13th Presidential Cup in Melbourne, 15-year-old great champion Woods impressed the bird in the fifth.

Woods’ masterclass continued with further birdies at holes 11, 14 and 15 to secure the first spot at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

Thomas welcomed the intense appearance, with the US watching the eighth consecutive trophy of the Presidents Cup.

“He played extremely well today, it’s no accident we won,” Thomas said after the win. “It really made me out there, and you know, it was a tough day out there, and having as many pairs of holes as possible was the reason we won the race.”

Thomas added: “The Tiger worked so well between the two of us today and played great, I mean I just didn’t take advantage of the opportunities, but you have a partner.

“It was nice, it’s nice to know when I go up to a par-3 or a par-4 that I just feel free because I know he’s playing well and he did it.”

Before taking over the captain’s responsibilities with his player division, Woods said: “Well, it was important for us and the US.

“J.T. and I went out there and worked well together, we got off to a quick start and got up to them early, and the kind kept going there.”
