2022 World Cup qualifiers: fire at Andorra’s national stadium on the eve of hosting England

Madrid: A fire broke out at the national stadium in Andorra on Friday, on the eve of the match between Andorra and England for the European qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It was reported that firefighters put out the fire just minutes after the outbreak and no one appears to have been injured. It is still unclear whether Saturday night’s match against England will go ahead as planned in the seventh round of Group I, which sees in leads the team of the “Three Lions” with 16 points, 4 points behind the second Albania. The Andorran government confirmed in a statement on Twitter that “a small fire that broke out in the national stadium this Friday afternoon was put out.” The fire broke out in the center of one side of the stadium and left a large black spot on the ground, while a metal structure was damaged and a small part of the artificial turf burned. Plumes of black smoke rose and hit some residential buildings near the burnt side of the stadium. The English team trained in earlier Friday on the 3,300-seat stadium in preparation of the match against the host team, ranked 156 in the world. (AFP)
