3 club Iranians excluded from participation in the AFC Champions League

The Asian Football Confederation announced on Friday the banning of three club Iranians from participation in the Asian Champions League of questyear because they did not meet the conditions for participation in the most important continental competition.

The Confederation claimed to have withdrawn the licenses of the club Persepolis, Al-Istiklal and Jules Johar because “they did not meet all the mandatory criteria”, without providing any explanation, but the criteria are broad and range from ensuring security to compliance with finances and legal regulations.

Interestingly, Persepolis has twice been second in the AFC Champions League in 2018 and 2020, while Al-Istiklal has participated several times in the tournament.
