32 dead and more than 66,000 affected by floods in the rainy season in Niger

32 people died as a result of floods and landslides in Niger during the rainy season, which has affected over 66,000 people since June, according to authorities.

According to the latest report issued by the Civil Protection and viewed by the Agence France-Presse, 17 people died due to the collapse of their homes and another 15 drowned, while 44 were injured.

The hardest hit areas include Zinder in the south, Diffa in the southeast, and Tillaberi in the southwest. So far, the capital, Niamey, has been spared from catastrophic repercussions.

Niger is the poorest country in the world according to the United Nations Human Development Index and often suffers floods in the rainy season.

The rainy season is from June to August or September. For years, the death toll from the rainy seasons in the country has been in increase, especially in the northern desert.

According to the authorities and the United Nations, in 2021, torrential rains killed at least 70 people and affected more than 200,000.
