4 European countries ask for a strategy to protect energy security

The leaders of Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece on Friday called for a common strategy in the European Union to ensure energy security after the conflict in Ukraine has caused prices to skyrocket.

“Only a response at the European level can solve a European problem with urgency and decision”, said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. in a conference in Rome after the four-party talks.

“We have to do it now . We can’t wait another day,” he added.

For his part, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said that the four countries want to “put concrete measures on the table to protect all member states” at the summit of EU leaders to be held next week in Brussels.

Draghi hosted Sanchez and Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, while Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis shared in video after testing positive for Corona virus earlier this week.

European countries have taken unilateral measures to reduce the effects of the high energy prices, which they already were in rise before Russia invaded Ukraine.

But several member states are pushing for collective European measures to solve the problem, which comes in the wake of the damage caused by the “Covid-19” pandemic.

Draghi previously stressed the importance of diversifying Europe’s energy supply and promoting renewable energy sources.

For its part, the European Commission said last week that it intends to significantly reduce imports of Russian gas and replace it with new gas sources, increase reserves for the coming winter and accelerate efforts to improve energy efficiency.

“No country can deal with it in such a crisis alone, “said the Greek prime minister, citing the political risks of rising energy bills.

Mitsotakis added that “this energy crisis could awaken the nightmare of populism in our continent”, noting that Greece “paid a heavy price” in this regard, stressing that “this phenomenon must not repeat itself”.
