6 months after the Lebanon disaster . an international call to speed up the investigation

Six months after the explosion that struck the port of Beirut on August 4, leaving hundreds of victims and thousands of injured, France and the United States affirmed their full support for the Lebanese people, stressing the need to announce the results of the investigation with full transparency and honesty.

A joint statement of the two countries stated that, with the assistance of the United Nations and Lebanese civil society partners, through the two support conferences held on August 9 and December 2, they will continue to provide urgent assistance to the Lebanese, including in the areas of health, education, housing, and food support.

A fair transparency system

France and the United States also expected quick results in the investigation into the causes of the explosion, and the statement said: “The Lebanese justice system must work transparently away from any political interference.”

The statement emphasized the urgent and vital need for Lebanese officials to work fully to fulfill the commitments they have undertaken and to form a credible government. As well as paving the way for the implementation of the necessary reforms, according to the aspirations of the Lebanese.

The statement stressed that these concrete measures will remain extremely important, and France, the United States, and their regional and international partners will participate to provide more for Lebanon.

French anger from procrastination

It is noteworthy that the French ambassador in Beirut, on the 6-month anniversary of the port explosion, considered that it was unacceptable that the political forces did not abide by their pledges to form a government that would endorse necessary reforms, in addition to the lack of progress in the investigation into the terrible tragedy.

“Six months after the explosion, it is unacceptable that the Lebanese are still waiting for answers from their leaders in the issue of the explosion,” France’s Ambassador Anne Greau said in a statement. It is unacceptable that Lebanon is still without a government to respond to the health and social crisis and to start implementing reforms. The necessary structure for the country’s recovery and stability, “noting that the commitments made before the President of the Republic are still ink on paper.

It also indicated that the deterioration of the health situation came to be added to the tragedy of the fourth of August, against the background of an economic, social and political crisis that we do not see an end to, stressing the continuation of France’s assistance for reconstruction in Lebanon.
