6 Rohingya killed in clashes between two groups in Bangladesh

Two groups of Rohingya refugees clashed on Friday in a camp in southern Bangladesh, killing at least six refugees and injuring 10 others, police said.

Shahab Qaiser Khan, commander of the armed police battalion that oversees the security of the camp, said violence erupted in Cox’s Bazar district when one side opened fire, killing four people at the scene.

Khan confirmed that two others are dead in hospital while they were being treated for their injuries.

It was not immediately clear why the violence broke out, but i media locals said the two sides were fighting over illegal drug trafficking in the camp. Bangladeshi officials have previously said some Rohingya groups are involved in serious crimes such as kidnappings and ransoms and using camps to smuggle drugs from Myanmar, where they lived before arriving in Bangladesh.

Khan explained that a Rohingya man had been arrested with weapons but did not provide further details. He said the police were looking for other suspects in the camp.

The violence occurred on Friday, nearly three weeks after an international representative of Rohingya refugees was killed in the camp in the same Ukhia district.

Mohibullah, who was in his forties, was a teacher who emerged as a leading refugee leader and a speaker representing the Muslim ethnic group at international meetings. He visited the White House in 2019 for a meeting on religious freedom with then President Donald Trump and spoke about the suffering and persecution facing the Rohingya in Myanmar.
