68 people died in the collapse of a suspension bridge in India

At least 68 people were killed when a footbridge collapsed in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

More than 400 people were “on or around” the suspension bridge over the Machu River in Morbi city when it collapsed on Sunday evening, state authorities said. in a statement, adding that 50 Navy officers and 30 Air Force personnel were involved in the National Disaster Management Team in search of the missing.

For his part, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had instructed the Prime Minister of the state to urgently mobilize the task force for the rescue operation.

The historic 230-meter-high bridge was built in the 19th century, closed for six months for renovations and reopened to the public last week.
