Breaking News: Sony Interactive Entertainment Announces Layoffs at Guerrilla Games
In a recent announcement, Guerrilla Games, the Amsterdam-based studio known for Horizon and Killzone series, is reportedly cutting 10% of its workforce. This decision is part of wider layoffs announced by parent company Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Sources have revealed that about 40 out of over 400 employees at Guerrilla will be affected by the layoffs. The studio, acquired by Sony in 2005, recently released Horizon Forbidden West for PS4 and PS5 in February 2022, with plans for a PC release next month. The game has already sold 8.4 million copies by April 2023.
Additionally, Guerrilla is working on an online project set in the Horizon universe, as well as promising more solo adventures featuring series protagonist Aloy.
In a related move, PlayStation announced that it will be laying off 900 employees worldwide, amounting to about 8% of its workforce. This includes staff cuts at Insomniac and Naughty Dog in the US, the shutdown of PlayStation’s London Studio, and layoffs at UK developer Firesprite.
Commenting on the restructuring, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst, former Guerrilla managing director, stated that the company is “reevaluating how we operate” and that some game projects have been cancelled as a result of the layoffs. It has been reported that a Twisted Metal live service game in development at Firesprite has also been cancelled.
