In an unexpected turn of events during the Christmas special taping of BBC’s comedy panel show, Would I Lie To You?, David Walliams made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Eyewitness accounts report that Walliams performed two Nazi salutes while his teammate, Helen George, recounted a story about her experience on Strictly Come Dancing back in 2015.
As George humorously detailed how she sprained her wrist from too much waving on the Strictly tour, Walliams decided to inject some inappropriate humor into the sketch. Demonstrating the wave himself, he escalated the moment by striking a Nazi salute, shocking both the audience and his fellow panelists.
According to reports from The Times, host Rob Brydon was quick to reprimand Walliams, reminding him that the show aired before the watershed. However, Walliams doubled down on his antics, making the salute a second time, this time adding a sexual twist that left many uneasy.
Comedian Lee Mack, who led Walliams’s team, was visibly unimpressed. Audience reactions ranged from gasps to discomfort, with one attendee describing the atmosphere as “very weird.â€Â
The public’s reaction didn’t take long to emerge, especially on social media. One Twitter user posted, “I didn’t have David Walliams doing a Nazi salute at the Would I Lie To You? Christmas taping on my 2025 bingo card.â€Â
In light of the incident, both the production company and the BBC officially condemned Walliams’s actions, labeling the gestures as “completely unacceptable.†A spokesperson for the BBC expressed regret, stating, “The use of such an offensive gesture is completely unacceptable, and we apologize to all at the recording for the offense caused.â€Â
This is not Walliams’s first brush with controversy. The comic has remained largely out of the public eye since 2022, following an incident in which he referred to an elderly contestant on Britain’s Got Talent with a disparaging term during filming. After a public apology, Walliams took legal action against the production company for misuse of private information, eventually settling and reportedly walking away with around £5 million.
