Elvis and Nancy Sinatra’s Unforgettable Movie Connection

Elvis PresleA Return to Stardom

After two long years of military service in West Germany, Elvis Presley made a triumphant return to the United States in 1960, and the world couldn’t wait to welcome the King back. His homecoming was marked by the extravagant TV special, The Frank Sinatra Timex ShoWelcome Home Elvis, which not only celebrated his return but also showcased the musical talent of his co-star, Nancy Sinatra, daughter of the legendary Frank Sinatra.

Nancy was sent to greet Elvis at the airport, a moment that would etch itself into the annals of music history. During the special, the duo shared the stage, performing a duet of You Make Me Feel So Young/Old. Later, Elvis and Frank exchanged the spotlight to perform each other’s hits, showing their mutual admiration and camaraderie.

Fast forward seven years, and Elvis and Nancy reunited on the big screen in the 1968 film Speedway, a movie that took audiences for a wild ride through the world of NASCAR racing. Released 57 years ago, the film allowed both stars to display their unique blend of charisma and talent.

A Cinematic Pairing in Speedway

Filmed in 1967, Speedway saw Elvis portraying the charming NASCAR driver Steve Grayson, while Nancy played Susan Jacks, an IRS agent assigned to monitor his every move due to his considerable racing debts. As the plot unfolded, their characters found themselves in an unexpected romance, a staple twist in Elvis films that added a touch of heart to the high-octane action.

Originally intended for the famous duo Sonny and Cher, Speedway not only marked Nancy’s last acting role but also showcased her undeniable chemistry with Elvis. Reflecting on their time together, she revealed, “I know he was the funniest man and probably the most serious man I knew. He made me laugh so hard. And at the same time, he called me late at night to discuss things like the ghetto and his concern for people in the ghetto.”

Though their relationship remained platonic and he was married to Priscilla Presley during filming, there was a palpable bond between Elvis and Nancy. In a gesture of camaraderie, he even asked her to host a baby shower for Priscilla as they awaited the arrival of their daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. Tragically, Lisa Marie would pass away in January 2023, extending a somber shadow over the joyful memories from the Speedway set.

Through it all, Elvis’s sensitivity and charm left a lasting impression on Nancy. As time marches on, the stories from behind the scenes of Speedway serve as a poignant reminder of the brilliance and depth of the King of Rock and Roll, who remains a cultural icon long after his passing at the age of 42 in 1977.
