Fans of ITV’s thrilling crime drama, Joan, were hit with disappointing news recently as the network announced there won’t be a second series. The show, which captivated viewers with its gritty tale, premiered in September 2024, featuring none other than Sophie Turner in the titular role of Joan Hannington. In a gripping six-part series, Turner portrayed a real-life jewel thief who, throughout the 1980s, stole over £3 million worth of jewels in London, earning herself the notorious nickname, “The Godmother” within the criminal underworld.
The storyline followed Joan, a fiery woman in her twenties, juggling the chaos of a violent marriage to Gary, a local criminal. When he goes on the run, Joan seizes the moment to reinvent herself and secure a better life for her young daughter, Kelly.
As she adopts new identities and navigates through a web of deceit, Joan transforms into a masterful jewel thief, embarking on a thrilling journey that pushes her limits, all driven by her fierce desire to build a safe haven for her daughter.
Upon release, Joan struck a chord with audiences, garnering rave reviews praising Sophie Turner’s stellar performance. “This production was gripping, and the fact that it’s based on real events makes it even more impactful,” one viewer noted on social media. Another fan echoed the sentiment, declaring it the best show they’d seen in ages, complementing the nostalgic music and outstanding cast performances.
However, despite the overwhelming love from fans, it seems ITV won’t be able to green-light a second season. “It just isn’t possible due to the cast’s busy schedules,” a spokesperson revealed. “ITV and Snowed-In Productions would love to produce another series, but as a consequence of cast availability and co-production discussions, it isn’t possible.”
Sophie, who shares two daughters with her ex-husband Joe Jonas, has her plate full with numerous projects. She’s slated to take on the iconic role of Lara Croft in an upcoming Tomb Raider television series, and she’s also set for roles in the sci-fi film Cloud One and the horror flick The Dreadful.
For those eager to relive the excitement of the first season, Joan is currently available for streaming on ITVX.
