Unlocking Stress-Free Travel with Apple Wallet Digital ID

Navigating airport security has just gotten a bit less stressful, thanks to Apple’s new digital ID feature. In select states, users can now add their driver’s license or state ID directly to Apple Wallet on the iPhone or Apple Watch. Instead of rummaging through your wallet at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints, simply tap your device for swift access.

This upgrade is particularly convenient for residents in supported states with compatible iPhones. After testing the feature in California, I found the setup to be impressively straightforward. Just remember, you’ll need an iPhone 8 or newer running the right version of iOS. While some users might face minor hiccups depending on their state’s rollout, this little tech shift can significantly enhance your travel experience.

Currently, digital IDs are primarily usable for TSA checkpoints at certain airports for domestic flights, but this may expand in the future. Although you can’t yet use your digital ID at your favorite bar or nightclub, the potential is exciting.

States Supporting Digital IDs on iPhones

As of now, only a select few states have rolled out support for digital IDs in Apple Wallet. The implementation varies by state, with some, like Louisiana and New York, requiring separate apps for their Mobile Driver’s License systems.

Here’s a list of the states and territories where digital IDs are currently supported:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Iowa
  • Maryland
  • New Mexico
  • Ohio
  • Puerto Rico

It’s worth noting that the total number of states supporting Apple Wallet is less than what the TSA currently allows, which includes options across Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, and various state apps.

iPhone Requirements to Add Your Driver’s License to Apple Wallet

Living in a supported state is just the beginning. To add your driver’s license, you’ll also need the right iPhone model and software.

Apple lists the minimum requirements as follows:

  • An iPhone 8 or later with the latest iOS
  • Face or Touch ID enabled
  • Two-factor authentication on your Apple account
  • A license or ID from a participating state
  • Your device’s region set to the United States

My Experience Adding My ID to My iPhone

I used an iPhone 16E for testing. The process of adding my ID was seamless. After scanning the front and back of my ID, I was prompted to verify my identity, but it was less daunting than I anticipated. The system took a live photo of my face in about 2.5 seconds.

The next step involved additional verification with a series of prompts asking me to perform facial movements, which took roughly three minutes. After submitting everything, I expected a long wait for a response, yet within 10 minutes, I received a notification that my ID was ready to use. That was surprisingly fast!

Considerations for Older iPhones

Not every iPhone will meet the requirements. Initially, I tried adding my ID using an iPhone 8 Plus, only to find that California wasn’t listed as a selection option. Meanwhile, a colleague with an iPhone 8 discovered only limited states were available.

My initial assumption was incorrect; it wasn’t just about Touch ID setup. A crucial detail in the Apple support documentation stated that for California, you’ll need an iPhone XS or later with at least iOS 17.5. If you own an iPhone 8 or X and live in California, you’re out of luck due to software limitations.

How to Add Your ID or Driver’s License to Apple Wallet

If you reside in a state that supports digital IDs, adding one is straightforward. Keep in mind that the verification process may take longer but remains user-friendly.

  • Open Apple Wallet.
  • Tap the Add button.
  • Select Driver’s License or ID and choose your location.
  • If desired, opt to add your ID to your iPhone, your Apple Watch, or both.
  • Follow the prompts to scan your license.

Ensure to scan your ID in a well-lit area and that the image is clear. You’ll then be prompted to confirm your identity with a selfie, which may involve some facial movements.

Transferring Your Digital ID to a New iPhone

If you upgrade your iPhone, you can easily transfer your ID as follows:

  • During the setup process, tap Wallet.
  • Select your ID.
  • Follow the steps to confirm the transfer.

What’s Next for Digital IDs?

Your digital ID isn’t merely a digital version of your physical ID. To view your information, tap the ID in Apple Wallet, select the “i” icon, and then tap on State ID info or Card Information. TSA checkpoints equipped to handle digital IDs will still require dedicated scanners, so it might not significantly speed up the process compared to showing a physical ID.

While a digital ID offers convenience, its usage cases are still limited. We’re quite far from eliminating physical IDs entirely—requiring substantial investment to support widespread adoption.

Preparing Your iPhone for Sale or Trade-In

If you’re moving on from a device that has your ID, it’s crucial to remove your digital ID before wiping your phone. Here’s how:

  • Open Apple Wallet and select your ID.
  • Tap the i” button at the top right.
  • Tap Remove State ID.
  • Read and confirm the removal.

Upcoming Features with iOS 26

With digital ID systems being gradually implemented by states, Apple is set to roll out a digital passport feature in iOS 26. Users will be able to scan passports for digital versions usable in domestic travel, though they won’t replace physical passports entirely.

While this mirrors capabilities already available on Android through Google Wallet, the rollout will be intriguing to watch.

Enhancing Age Verification with Wallet ID

Additionally, a feature called Verify with Wallet will facilitate age verification when ordering alcohol. This will let your stored digital ID confirm your age without needing to present a physical ID, enhancing the experience for food delivery services.

With support from platforms like Chime, Turo, and Uber Eats, this feature has the potential to streamline everyday transactions.
