In October 2024, the tragic case of a teen’s death significantly spotlighted the concerns surrounding AI companionship platforms. A lawsuit was filed against Character Technologies, its founders, and tech giants like Google and Alphabet. The suit alleged that the chatbot experiences offered could be dangerously misleading, portraying itself as a licensed psychotherapist and adult lover while adopting anthropomorphic and hypersexualized traits.
The incident led to immediate scrutiny from lawmakers. U.S. senators Alex Padilla and Peter Welch addressed their concerns to several AI companies, including Character.AI. They emphasized the mental health and safety risks that such AI companions pose to young users. Anand, a spokesperson for Character.AI, acknowledged the challenges, stating, “AI is stochastic; it’s hard to always understand what’s coming. So it’s not a one-time investment.”
This increasing scrutiny is essential, especially considering that Character.AI boasts a user base of around 20 million monthly active users. Many of these users are part of Generation Z and Generation Alpha, indicating a demographic that often includes minors. To address these concerns, Character.AI has made notable strides in differentiating its offerings for users under and over 18 years old. Anand revealed, “In the last six months, we’ve invested significantly in serving users under 18 differently than those over 18.”
Implementing Safety Measures
Character.AI recognizes the need for robust safety features in its platform. Over 10 of its 70 employees focus exclusively on trust and safety, enhancing safeguards like age verification and personalized models tailored for younger users. Additionally, new features have been introduced, such as parental insights, which allow guardians to monitor their teens’ interactions with the app.
The introduction of an under-18 model last December was a pivotal step in this direction. According to a company spokesperson, this model limits access to a narrower set of characters, applying filters to exclude those linked to mature or sensitive topics. However, safety in AI extends beyond mere technical updates. Anand emphasizes that a collaborative approach involving regulators, developers, and parents is crucial for creating a safe environment. He mentions, “This has to stay safe for her,” referring to his daughter’s experience interacting with AI characters.
While the AI companionship market is on an upward trajectory, with around $68 million spent in the first half of 2024 alone—a whopping 200% increase from the previous year—the competition remains fierce. New entrants like xAI and established names like Microsoft are vying for consumer attention, often pushing boundaries in ways that raise ethical questions.
To carve out a niche in this crowded marketplace, Character.AI takes a different approach. Instead of competing solely based on the features or to engage in a race towards hyper-realistic avatars, the company emphasizes the importance of safety and responsible engagement.
