Netflix‘s upcoming live-action series, Scooby-Doo: Origins, has officially concluded production, marking a significant milestone for the reboot of the long-running mystery franchise. Filming for the eight-episode first season finished on September 13, 2026, following a production schedule that began in April in Atlanta, Georgia. The series is currently slated for a global release on the streaming platform in 2027.
The project, which filmed under the working title “Talbot Pines,” represents a stylistic shift for the property. Developed by showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, the series is being produced by Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Unlike previous live-action adaptations that relied on computer-generated imagery to bring the titular Great Dane to life, this iteration features a real Great Dane puppy in the role of Scooby-Doo.
A Grounded Approach to the Mystery Gang
The decision to use a live animal rather than CGI aligns with the series’ “grounded” tonal direction. According to details shared via Netflix Tudum, the plot centers on an origin story set during Shaggy and Daphne’s final summer at camp. The narrative moves away from the campy aesthetic of the 2002 and 2004 theatrical films, instead focusing on a supernatural murder investigation. The mystery begins when the group encounters a puppy that may have been a witness to the crime.
The choice of Atlanta as a production hub draws parallels to other high-profile Netflix genre hits, such as Stranger Things. The setting and tone suggest a more atmospheric take on the source material, though it remains unclear if the real dog will feature a speaking role or remain a non-anthropomorphic animal companion.
