Amber Midthunder Addresses Potential Marvel Return for X-Men 2028 Reboot

As Marvel Studios accelerates development for its highly anticipated mutant debut, attention is turning toward potential casting for the X-Men fold. Amber Midthunder, who portrayed the physical combat specialist Kerry Loudermilk in the critically acclaimed FX series Legion, was a central figure during the show’s three-season run.

The series is noted for the unique creative partnership Midthunder shared with co-star Bill Irwin—who played the other half of her character’s symbiotic duo, Cary Loudermilk. Legion, which aired from 2017 to 2019, is often remembered as a “masterpiece” of the genre for its avant-garde storytelling and psychological depth.

The 2028 X-Men Reboot Takes Shape

The news arrives as Marvel Studios solidifies the creative foundation for its official X-Men reboot, currently scheduled for release on May 5, 2028. The production has seen a significant shift in its creative leadership, with Emmy-winning talent now at the helm of the script.

In a strategic move to define the tone of the new era, Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo have taken over writing duties for the film, replacing Michael Lesslie. Lee, known for the success of Beef, and Calo, a key creative force behind The Bear, are expected to bring a grounded yet sharp perspective to the mutant team. The film will be directed by Jake Schreier, who is also handling Marvel’s Thunderbolts.

Casting Reports and Production Status

While the script is still being refined, the reported cast for the 2028 feature has already generated significant industry buzz. Christopher Abbott is slated to take on the mantle of Professor Charles Xavier.

Additional reported casting includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey and Adam Driver as the villainous Mr. Sinister. This lineup suggests a focus on established, heavy-hitting dramatic actors to anchor the new franchise.

The potential for legacy actors like Midthunder to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a recurring theme following the studio’s recent use of multiverse narratives. Though Kerry Loudermilk was an original creation for the Legion television series rather than a classic comic book figure, the character’s popularity has led to persistent fan interest in her return. Midthunder is currently collaborating with Mike Flanagan on a new Carrie series, and her former co-star Dan Stevens has previously expressed interest in revisiting his role as David Haller.
