Samuel L. Jackson has confirmed that Nick Fury will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the Multiverse Saga’s conclusion, though fans will have to wait longer than expected to see the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director back on the big screen. Speaking at a red carpet event for his upcoming film The Beast, Jackson clarified his status for the next two major crossover events.
According to Samuel L. Jackson, he will not be appearing in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Instead, Marvel has slated his return for the following year in Avengers: Secret Wars. Jackson noted that the studio specifically told him he would be sitting out the first of the two films, stating, “You’re not gonna be in this movie. You’ll be in the next.”

The confirmation provides a definitive timeline for Fury’s next appearance while debunking recent industry rumors that suggested he might appear alongside Anthony Mackie’s Captain America in the 2026 film. Based on current production schedules, Avengers: Doomsday is set to premiere on December 18, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.
The Multiverse Saga Timeline
Jackson’s return in Secret Wars marks a significant milestone for the actor and the franchise. It is expected to be his 13th MCU film and 16th project overall. While the character was central to the early phases of the MCU as the architect who first assembled the Avengers, his role in the current saga has been more intermittent.
This production schedule ensures that Fury’s return will serve as a bookend for this era of the MCU, potentially mirroring his foundational role in the original 2012 Avengers assembly.
Expanding the Secret Wars Cast
While Jackson is the latest veteran to confirm his involvement, other reports suggest the ensemble for Secret Wars is beginning to take shape. According to listings on the British Stunt Register, Sandra Hüller has reportedly joined the cast.
By skipping Avengers: Doomsday, the narrative focus for Fury appears to be shifting entirely toward the resolution of the Multiverse conflict. This strategic absence may allow the 2026 film to focus on the introduction of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom without the presence of the franchise’s original connective tissue, saving Fury’s perspective for the final stakes of the 2027 release.
