Sega has unveiled a high-end collectible for Sonic the Hedgehog that pairs luxury manufacturing with biotechnology. The “Sonic the Hedgehog DNA Figure” features a capsule containing synthetic DNA sequences designed to represent the biological makeup of the fictional character.
The figure incorporates actual genetic material into its design. This “DNA” is not biological matter from a living organism but rather synthetic nucleic acid sequences meticulously crafted by the Japanese science collective LOM BABY. The collective is known for producing “synthetic artifacts,” including a previous project that recreated a physical representation of the T-Virus from the Resident Evil series.

The Science of a Fictional Genome
The core of the collectible is a specialized protective capsule housed inside a green Chaos Emerald, which is embedded in the figure’s chest. Inside this capsule, the synthetic DNA sequences act as a digital-to-biological archive of Sonic’s unique characteristics. According to Anime News Network, the encoded data represents several of the hedgehog’s most famous traits, including his signature blue coloring and immense leg strength.
In a nod to series lore, the sequences also include the character’s well-known inability to swim. While the DNA is technically real in its chemical structure, it is a symbolic representation rather than a blueprint for cloning a living creature. The project is designed to explore the intersection of digital media and physical permanence, treating the character’s “source code” as a biological artifact.
The inclusion of custom-sequenced genetic material marks a significant shift in how Sega is positioning its flagship mascot for the luxury collector market.
