Martin Freeman is set to break a 37-year tradition by becoming the first actor to officially provide a voice for Gromit, the famously silent canine star of the Wallace & Gromit franchise. Since the character’s debut in 1989’s A Grand Day Out, the beagle has communicated exclusively through expressive eyebrow movements and physical comedy, but he will now share his perspective through a new literary medium.
The Sherlock and The Hobbit star will narrate the audiobook edition of Grand: The Autobiography of Gromit, as Told to Nick Park. While this marks a historic first for the character, series creator Nick Park clarified that the voice represents Gromit’s “inner thoughts” and witticisms rather than spoken dialogue within a film. The decision allows the franchise to maintain the character’s silent nature on screen while exploring his internal monologue for the first time.

A New Chapter for a $421 Million Franchise
The expansion into an “autobiography” comes as the Wallace & Gromit property continues to be a financial cornerstone for Aardman Animations. The franchise has helped drive over $421 million at the global box office when combined with major feature hits like The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Chicken Run. Martin Freeman was selected for the role because his “wry humor” and “thoughtfulness” were seen as a perfect match for the personality Gromit has projected non-verbally for decades.
The autobiography arrives during a busy period for the series. A new feature film, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, was released in late 2024, featuring the return of the iconic villainous penguin Feathers McGraw. Despite the release of the book, Park has assured fans that Gromit will not suddenly begin talking to Wallace in future animated installments; the silent dynamic between the two remains a core element of their cinematic identity.
Release Schedule and Format
Fans will have to wait until 2026 to hear Freeman’s interpretation of the character’s inner life. The release schedule for the memoir is currently set for the following dates:
- Audiobook Edition: Scheduled for release on October 22, 2026, featuring Martin Freeman’s narration.
The book is expected to cover Gromit’s “life story,” providing a retrospective on his various adventures and his long-suffering relationship with his eccentric inventor companion. By casting an actor of Freeman’s caliber, the production aims to bring a specific British sensibility to the character’s private observations, bridging the gap between his stoic exterior and his sophisticated mind.
