Tarantino to Write and Direct Swashbuckling Comedy The Popinjay Cavalier for London Stage

Quentin Tarantino is set to make his West End debut as both a writer and director with the upcoming stage production “The Popinjay Cavalier.” The play, which stars Sacha Baron Cohen in the title role, will open at London’s Phoenix Theatre in March 2027.

Public booking for the production opened at 12 p.m. BST on October 12, 2026. According to ATG Tickets, the production has committed to accessibility, with entry-level seats starting at £25. Previews are scheduled to begin on February 23, 2027, leading up to an official opening night on March 18. The play is currently slated for a limited three-month run, with performances scheduled through June 13, 2027.

A Revival of the Swashbuckling Genre

“The Popinjay Cavalier” is described as a swashbuckling comedy set in 1830s Europe. The script draws heavy influence from the works of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda, and Jesse Lasky Jr., authors known for their contributions to the classic adventure and “cloak-and-sword” sub-genres. The plot is expected to center on themes of deception and disguise, hallmarks of the vintage cinematic styles Tarantino often references in his filmography.

While this marks Sacha Baron Cohen’s first appearance on the West End, his casting in a Tarantino-directed comedy follows years of speculation regarding when the two would finally align on a creative project.

The production is being staged by Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment. To manage the physical demands of the genre, the creative team includes fight director Philip d’Orleans, alongside scenic designer Tom Pye and lighting designer Natasha Chivers.

Tarantino’s Expanding 2026-2027 Slate

The announcement of the West End residency comes just ahead of another major Tarantino project. The director wrote the screenplay for “The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth,” a film directed by David Fincher that is scheduled for release in November 2026. As reported by The Guardian, the transition to theater represents a new medium for Tarantino, who has long expressed interest in playwrighting as he nears the conclusion of his filmmaking career.

Industry observers have noted the timing of the play’s debut, which follows the November film release, suggesting a highly active period for the filmmaker. “The Popinjay Cavalier” stands as a distinct theatrical venture.
