Disney's 2005 fantasy epic is receiving a 4K remaster ahead of the franchise's upcoming return.

Disney is bringing the original cinematic journey into C.S. Lewis’s wardrobe to modern home theaters just as a new era for the franchise begins. The studio officially announced that The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe will receive its first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release on December 15, 2026, arriving in a Limited Edition Steelbook format.

The 2005 fantasy epic, which helped define the mid-2000s blockbuster landscape, is being remastered to align with the growing momentum for Netflix’s upcoming franchise reboot. This physical release focuses on the theatrical cut of the film and includes a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack. However, technical details provided in early press materials suggest the disc may lack Dolby Vision HDR—a feature currently available on the Disney+ streaming version—and it will not include the extensive bonus features found on the legacy 4-disc extended edition sets.

Setting the Stage for Greta Gerwig’s Prequel

The December release of the 4K remaster arrives exactly two months before Netflix’s highly anticipated return to the property. Director Greta Gerwig is leading a reimagining of the series, starting with The Magician’s Nephew. On October 13, 2026, Netflix unveiled the first trailer for the film, featuring a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” to set a distinct tonal shift from previous adaptations.

The prequel explores the origins of Narnia and features a high-profile ensemble cast. Meryl Streep provides the voice for the Great Lion, Aslan, while Daniel Craig stars as Uncle Andrew. The production also features Emma Mackey as Jadis (the character who eventually becomes the White Witch), Carey Mulligan, and Ciarán Hinds. David McKenna has been cast as Digory Kirke, one of the children who witnesses the creation of the magical realm.

Release Timeline and Theatrical Strategy

Netflix is pursuing an aggressive theatrical strategy for the new film, signaling a shift in how the streaming giant handles its major intellectual properties. The Magician’s Nephew is scheduled for a global theatrical release on February 12, 2027, following special IMAX previews beginning February 10. This marks a 45-day exclusive cinema window before the film moves to the streaming platform on April 2, 2027.

As Disney prepares its legacy 4K release, fans of the original trilogy are monitoring whether the sequels, Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, will receive similar technical upgrades. For now, the focus remains on the 2005 original, which includes legacy audio commentaries and the “Explore Narnia 3-D Map” as part of the Steelbook’s supplementary material. The trailer for the Netflix prequel has already sparked significant discussion regarding Gerwig’s visual direction and the casting choices for these foundational literary characters.
