Paradox Development Studio has released Crusader Kings 3 Update 1.040 (v1.20.1), a patch focused on deepening historical religious mechanics and refining the economy of faith. Launched on October 15, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, the update introduces a dedicated interface for tracking the Great Schism and expands the capabilities of landless clergy within the Ruler Designer.
Historical Saints and Religious Interface
The update integrates five specific historical figures with dedicated sainthood status and burial sites. Players can now interact with the legacies of Clotilde, Sigismund, Guntram, Sigebert III, and William of Gellone. These additions are paired with a new Christian Church interface designed to track the progress of the Schism. This view allows players to monitor faction stances and specific crisis indicators that influence the eventual break between the Eastern and Western churches.
For players using the Ruler Designer, the update expands character creation options:
- The Monk trait is now manually selectable during character creation.
- Custom rulers can now be designed for landless roles, specifically Archbishops and Cardinals.
Economy and Balance Changes
Update 1.040 significantly increases the resource requirements for religious advancement and lifestyle bonuses. These changes aim to tighten the “piety economy” and make religious titles more difficult to acquire. According to the official Steam patch notes, the costs for canonization and the benefits of scholarship have been adjusted as follows:
- Canonization Costs: The price to Canonize a Saint has risen to 3,000 Piety (previously 2,000) and 500 Gold (previously 300).
- Lifestyle Bonuses: The maximum experience bonus for the Religious Scholar lifestyle has been reduced from +50% to +25%.
AI Improvements and Stability Fixes
Refinements to AI behavior focus on historical event integrity. The AI is now restricted from declaring war on the leader of the Frankokratia while the Fourth Crusade story arc is active. This prevents early disruptions to the narrative flow of the crusade chapters.
Technical stability has also been addressed to resolve common crashes reported by the community. Notable fixes include:
- Resolved a crash occurring when displaying scheme agent slots within the Intrigue window.
- Fixed a stability issue triggered when the game updated Dynasty modifiers.
While the update is identified as version 1.20.1 on PC, console players (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S) will see the update labeled as version 1.040.000 to maintain parity across all platforms.
