Quentin Tarantino has officially finished writing the script for his tenth and final feature film, but the director says he is in no hurry to step back behind the camera. Appearing on The Graham Norton Show on October 16, 2026, Tarantino confirmed that while the screenplay is complete, he intends to “live a little” before beginning production on what is expected to be his cinematic swan song.
The director’s decision to pause his film career follows a significant shift in his creative focus toward the London stage and his growing family. Tarantino and his wife, Daniella Pick, are currently expecting their third child, a personal milestone that the director cited as a primary reason for his temporary step away from the director’s chair.
The West End Debut
Before the world sees Tarantino’s final movie, the filmmaker will make his debut in London’s West End. He is set to write and direct The Popinjay Cavalier, a swashbuckling stage farce starring Sacha Baron Cohen. The production is scheduled to begin previews at the Phoenix Theatre on February 23, 2027, with an official opening in March.

The play is described as a comedy set in 1830s Europe, drawing inspiration from the works of old Hollywood figures like Jesse Lasky Jr. Tarantino has indicated that film production will not commence until after the play completes its scheduled run on June 13, 2027. This timeline suggests that his tenth film likely will not enter principal photography until the latter half of 2027 at the earliest.
Moving Past ‘The Movie Critic’
The completion of this new script marks a definitive turn away from his previously announced project, The Movie Critic. In early 2024, Tarantino reportedly scrapped plans for his final film as it was then envisioned, because the story began to feel like a “spiritual sequel” to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood rather than a fresh creative challenge.
While the director’s final credit remains on the horizon, he continues to produce material for other platforms. He recently penned The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a project for Netflix that expands on characters from his 2019 film. Though Tarantino wrote the script, David Fincher is reportedly attached to direct, allowing Tarantino to maintain his strict self-imposed limit of directing only ten feature films.
Tarantino has long maintained that he would retire from film directing after his tenth movie to ensure his filmography remains “perfect” and to avoid a late-career decline. With the script now finalized and a theater production on the calendar, the director appears to be carefully curated the final chapters of his Hollywood legacy.
