Paul Bettany has clarified the nature of his relationship with Johnny Depp, stating that the two had not spoken for years by the time their private text messages were read aloud during Depp’s 2020 libel trial. In a recent interview with The Times, Bettany addressed the public perception of their bond, noting that the most unusual aspect of the legal proceedings was being portrayed as a “close friend” of the actor.
The WandaVision star explained that he chose to remain silent while the messages were scrutinized in court because he believed his personal reputation would eventually speak for itself. Bettany cited his 23-year marriage and typically quiet lifestyle as reasons why he expected the controversy to be viewed as a “nothing burger” by the public. Despite the intense media coverage surrounding the trial, he confirmed that he has still not spoken to Depp since the texts were made public.

The public perception of a close friendship between the two actors was largely fueled by their frequent professional collaborations. Bettany and Depp shared the screen in three major films over a five-year span: the 2010 thriller The Tourist, the 2014 sci-fi drama Transcendence, and the 2015 action-comedy Mortdecai. These high-profile projects placed the actors together frequently on press tours and film sets, cementing a narrative of personal closeness that Bettany now suggests was overstated.
The private communications at the center of the controversy dated back to 2013 and 2014. During the 2020 libel trial against a British tabloid, and subsequently during the 2022 defamation trial in Virginia, these messages were introduced as evidence. The texts included graphic jokes regarding Amber Heard, involving references to burning and a “drowning test.” Bettany had previously described the experience of having his private messages made public as “unpleasant” in a 2021 interview, though his latest comments provide the first definitive clarification on the distance between him and Depp during that period.
Bettany is currently preparing for the conclusion of his Marvel Cinematic Universe trilogy with the upcoming series VisionQuest. The series follows the events of WandaVision and the film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, marking a return to the high-profile role that has defined much of his recent career away from the courtroom drama that briefly entangled his name.
