Jesse Eisenberg to Write and Direct 2002-Set Limited Series for A24

Jesse Eisenberg is expanding his creative partnership with A24 to develop his first television series as a creator and director. The Academy Award-nominated actor is set to write, direct, and executive produce an untitled six-episode series, transitioning his distinct narrative voice from the independent film circuit to a prestige limited series format.

The upcoming project is a period piece set in the autumn of 2002. The story centers on an 18-year-old girl and is designed to explore what Eisenberg describes as the “early days of the culture wars.” While specific plot details remain under wraps, the series is based on one of Eisenberg’s own short stories. The actor has previously published a collection of short fiction, Bream Gives Me Hiccups, which frequently explored complex social anxieties and interpersonal friction.

A Growing Partnership with A24

The development marks Eisenberg’s third collaboration with A24 in a directorial capacity. He previously made his directorial debut with the studio in 2022 with When You Finish Saving the World and recently completed work on The Debut, which is expected to circulate on the festival circuit throughout 2026. While Eisenberg has appeared as a lead actor in television projects such as Fleishman Is in Trouble and the early-career series Get Real, this untitled A24 project represents the first time he will serve as the primary creative force behind a television production.

The series is being produced alongside Peter Rice, who is currently the Chief Content Officer at Netflix. Rice developed the project under a prior deal with A24. Given Rice’s current executive role, there is industry speculation that the project may be shopped to Netflix, though A24 is currently preparing to pitch the series to multiple potential buyers and streaming platforms.

By setting the series in 2002, the production aims to capture a specific inflection point in American social discourse. The era, characterized by the early growth of digital connectivity and the political shifts of the post-9/11 landscape, serves as the backdrop for a story that seeks to trace the lineage of modern ideological divisions. Production timelines and additional casting for the lead role of the 18-year-old protagonist have not yet been announced.
