Susanna Reid has revealed the moment of professional shock she experienced in 2015 upon learning that Piers Morgan would become her permanent co-host on Good Morning Britain. Recalling the announcement during an appearance on the woman&home loves podcast, Reid shared that her immediate reaction involved confronting her editor with a blunt, six-word question: “What on earth are you doing?”
The veteran broadcaster described a scene of immediate apprehension. Upon hearing of the hiring decision, Reid reportedly removed her microphone and headed straight to the dressing room to seek an explanation from the show’s leadership. At the time, Reid had no personal relationship with Morgan and was uncertain how their vastly different broadcasting styles would mesh on live television.

Despite the initial friction, the pairing lasted from November 2015 until March 2021, becoming one of the most discussed partnerships in British breakfast television. Reid admitted that while she was originally hesitant, she eventually found professional value in Morgan’s “ruthless” approach to journalism. She described his interviewing technique, particularly when questioning politicians, as being like a “dog with a bone,” noting that his persistence taught her significant lessons in tenure and accountability during live broadcasts.
The partnership ended abruptly in March 2021 following Morgan’s departure from the program. Reid reflected on the aftermath of that exit, acknowledging that their friendship entered a “very fragile” period in the months that followed. The two have since reconciled, and Reid now characterizes Morgan as a “really important person” in her life, despite the “rough patch” they navigated after his departure.
Since the end of their fixed partnership, Good Morning Britain has moved toward a rotating co-host format. Reid remains the program’s lead anchor three days a week, appearing alongside a variety of presenters including Ed Balls, Richard Madeley, and Adil Ray. While her current role involves adapting to different hosting dynamics, she credits the five-year era with Morgan as a definitive period in her career that began with a moment of total disbelief.
