Super Bowl LXI to Feature Live Animated Star Wars Alternate Telecast

Disney and the NFL have announced a collaboration that will bring the Star Wars universe to the world’s largest sporting stage. In February 2027, Super Bowl LXI will feature a dedicated, real-time animated alternate telecast, marking the first time the franchise’s branding and technology have been applied to the NFL’s championship game.

The expansion into the Super Bowl follows a successful trial during the 2024 regular season. On December 9, 2024, the “Star Wars: Funday Football” presentation of the Houston Texans vs. Dallas Cowboys served as a proof-of-concept for the technology. This upcoming 2027 release scales that production for the Super Bowl’s massive global audience, utilizing the broadcast rights held by Disney-owned networks ABC and ESPN.

Real-Time Animation Technology

The broadcast is powered by sophisticated tracking systems that translate live human movement into a digital environment. Using Sony’s Hawk-Eye SMT data and Beyond Sports technology, every player on the field is tracked and rendered as a character within a Star Wars setting. This allows the game to be “played” in real-time in iconic locations from the films, such as a Star Destroyer or the sands of Tatooine, complete with Force effects and lightsaber-inspired visuals.

According to an official ESPN announcement, the Star Wars: Funday Football version of Super Bowl LXI will be available across multiple platforms, including Disney+, ESPN+, Disney Channel, and Disney XD. The primary traditional broadcast will remain available on ABC and ESPN for viewers seeking a standard viewing experience.

Expanding the “Funday Football” Model

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by Disney and the NFL to engage younger demographics through familiar intellectual property. Prior to the Star Wars integration, the league experimented with similar real-time animated broadcasts featuring “The Simpsons” and “Toy Story.” However, the shift to Star Wars represents a significant increase in technical complexity, moving from the simplified “SpongeBob” style visuals used by competitors to the detailed textures and atmospheric lighting required for Lucasfilm’s universe.

While the standard Super Bowl broadcast focuses on high-stakes athletics, the alternate telecast is designed to bridge the gap between sports and cinematic storytelling. By using live player data to drive animated avatars, the NFL is able to maintain the integrity of the live game while surrounding it with the characters and aesthetics of the Star Wars franchise.
