Hulu’s reimagining of the 1996 Jim Carrey cult classic The Cable Guy has reached a significant milestone. Following the completion of its pilot episode, the project has reportedly received “glowing” internal feedback, positioning the production for a potential full series order at the streaming platform. This update comes just months after Hulu first ordered the pilot in June 2026, timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the original film’s release.
The series marks a highly anticipated reunion for New Girl stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr., who lead the project as Chip Douglas and Steven Stephens, respectively. Unlike a traditional shot-for-shot remake, this version is described as a “Fargo-style” reimagining. It utilizes the themes and character names of the original Ben Stiller-directed movie to tell a new story tailored for the modern era.

Production and Creative Pedigree
Filming for the pilot took place in Vancouver between July 28 and August 7, 2026. The production brings together a creative team with deep roots in character-driven comedy. The script was penned by Rob Rosell, known for his work on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, alongside Joe Piarulli and Luan Thomas, who previously served as writers and producers on Cobra Kai.
The reimagining explores the dynamics of modern male friendship through a dark comedic lens. In this iteration, Chip Douglas remains a socially isolated figure, but his character is given new depth by the reality of the 2020s. While the original Chip was obsessed with the communal experience of television, the new series reportedly leans into the irony of a cable technician trying to find connection in a world that has almost entirely transitioned to streaming services.
Cast and Character Dynamics
The project has assembled a robust supporting cast to flesh out the world around Johnson and Wayans Jr. Crystal Fox stars as Lynette, the mother of Wayans’ character, Steven, while Natasha Rothwell portrays Steven’s sister, Gina. Rebecca Rittenhouse has also joined the production in the role of Robin, Steven’s ex-girlfriend.
The casting of Damon Wayans Jr. adds a layer of industry nostalgia to the project; his father, Damon Wayans, starred in In Living Color, the sketch comedy series that famously served as the breakout platform for Jim Carrey. By pairing Wayans Jr. with Johnson, the production aims to capitalize on the established chemistry between the two actors while departing from the specific dynamic shared by Carrey and Matthew Broderick in the 1996 film.
While Hulu has not yet officially announced a premiere date or a formal series pickup, the positive reception of the pilot suggests the project is a high priority for the streamer. The “Fargo-style” approach allows the creators to navigate the legacy of the original film—which was initially polarizing but eventually grew into a beloved cult hit—without being beholden to its exact narrative beats.
