Disney is officially heading back to the portal. The studio has entered early development on a fifth installment of the Halloweentown franchise, marking the first new entry in the supernatural series in two decades. The project arrives as Disney continues to lean into “legacy sequels” for its most enduring Disney Channel Intellectual Property (IP).

According to reports from TheWrap, screenwriters Lily Houghton and Ryan Koehn have been tapped to pen the screenplay for the sequel. Houghton recently worked on the 2026 horror-comedy Forbidden Fruits, suggesting a potential shift in tone or a modernized approach to the magical world first created by Paul Bernbaum in 1998. The film is currently intended for a dual release on both Disney Channel and the Disney+ streaming platform.

Data-Driven Nostalgia

The decision to resurrect the 28-year-old franchise is reportedly backed by significant internal metrics. The Halloweentown series has remained a seasonal powerhouse, accumulating more than 160 million hours streamed globally on Disney+. This high engagement level mirrors the success of other recent Disney revival projects, including the 2025 hit Freakier Friday and the 2026 release of Camp Rock 3.

While the project is in the early scripting phase, it faces the challenge of bridging a 20-year gap since the last film, Return to Halloweentown (2006). That final installment remains a point of discussion among fans due to the controversial recasting of the lead character, Marnie Piper, with Sara Paxton replacing original actress Kimberly J. Brown.

Casting and Legacy Questions

As of late October 2026, no official casting decisions have been confirmed. The biggest question for the production involves how the story will address the absence of the late Debbie Reynolds, who portrayed the iconic matriarch Aggie Cromwell and passed away in 2016. Aggie was the emotional and magical anchor of the first four films, and her character’s legacy is expected to be a central focus of any direct sequel.

Fan interest in the original cast has remained high, partly due to the personal lives of the actors. Kimberly J. Brown has stayed closely connected to the franchise’s community, and her 2024 marriage to Daniel Kountz—who played the antagonist Kal in Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge—reignited social media interest in the series. According to Forbes, while the new film will utilize characters created for the 1998 original, it is not yet clear if the story will serve as a total reboot or a direct continuation of the Piper family lineage.

The development of Halloweentown 5 suggests Disney is looking to maintain its hold on the “spooky season” demographic, utilizing established brands that appeal to both the original millennial audience and a newer generation of streaming viewers.
