Just one day after Electronic Arts officially shuttered BioWare, ending the legendary studio’s 31-year run, a leaked trailer for the next Mass Effect project has appeared online. The footage, which surfaced on Reddit via an anonymous account, appears to be an internal pre-production look at a title identified as Mass Effect: Universe.
The leak arrives during a period of significant upheaval for the developer’s parent company. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier and reporters at IGN have independently verified that the footage is authentic material from the now-canceled project. The video offers a glimpse into a direction for the franchise that was intended to return to its roots in the Milky Way galaxy, thousands of years after the conclusion of the original trilogy.

The Return of Liara T’Soni
The leaked trailer focuses on a new N7 protagonist who is shown meeting a significantly older Liara T’Soni in a bar. According to reports surrounding the footage, the narrative was designed to bridge the gap between the original games and a new era of exploration. Unlike the experimental direction of Mass Effect: Andromeda, this project was confirmed to be set in the Milky Way, dealing with the long-term consequences of the Reaper invasion and the subsequent evolution of galactic society.
Despite the high production value suggested by the Mass Effect: Universe footage, the project was reportedly a casualty of broader financial restructuring at EA. While some online speculation initially suggested the trailer might be AI-generated, industry insiders have since clarified that it represents legitimate work-in-progress assets from the BioWare team prior to the October 21, 2026, shutdown.
Financial Restructuring and the BioWare Closure
The closure of BioWare was not an isolated event but part of a 400-person layoff at Electronic Arts. This downsizing followed a $55 billion leveraged buyout of EA by a consortium led by Silver Lake and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). That acquisition reportedly left the publisher with an $18 billion debt burden, necessitating a $700 million cost-cutting mandate that ultimately claimed the Dragon Age and Mass Effect developer.
The timing of the leak has been characterized by former employees as a “bittersweet post-mortem” for a studio that helped define the Western RPG genre. While the game development side of the franchise is currently in limbo, the intellectual property remains active in other mediums. The live-action Mass Effect television series at Amazon MGM Studios remains in active development, surviving the restructuring that ended the studio’s internal game production.
There is currently no official word from EA regarding whether the Mass Effect license will be shopped to external developers or if Mass Effect: Universe represents the final attempt at a mainline entry for the foreseeable future.
