Apple is significantly accelerating its development of autonomous AI capabilities for Siri, as the company enters a new era under CEO John Ternus. Following the launch of competitive “agentic” AI products from OpenAI and Meta in September 2026, internal pressure at Apple has mounted to transform Siri from a voice assistant into a proactive worker capable of managing complex tasks across the operating system.

According to reports from Bloomberg, John Ternus is reportedly pressuring software chief Craig Federighi to shorten the Siri roadmap. This push for speed comes just weeks after Ternus officially succeeded Tim Cook as CEO on September 1, 2026. The shift in leadership coincides with a massive leap in the competitive landscape; OpenAI released its “Dots” agents powered by GPT-6 Astra on September 29, while Meta’s “Muse” agent, focused on errands and life administration, debuted on September 8.

To keep pace, Apple is reportedly pivoting its software culture. Internal reports suggest the engineering teams are testing a “6-and-2” development pipeline. This model allocates six weeks for active feature coding followed by only two weeks for integration and convergence, a departure from Apple’s traditionally longer stability cycles. The goal is to increase feature velocity as Siri prepares for its most significant functional expansion since its inception.

The iOS 27.3 Roadmap and App Control

The first tangible results of this acceleration are expected to arrive in December 2026 with the public release of iOS 27.3. While foundational elements are already being spotted in current beta builds, the December update is slated to grant Siri fine-grained control over first-party applications. These capabilities include:

  • Photos: Advanced editing commands such as rotating, cropping, or extending images via voice or text prompts.
  • Safari: Sophisticated tab organization and management across active sessions.
  • System Intents: Initial autonomous navigation within the Apple ecosystem to execute multi-step workflows.

While first-party app control is the immediate priority, the timeline for third-party integration remains more distant.

Leadership Friction and Engineering Shifts

The race to make Siri more agentic has exposed internal tensions within Apple’s executive branch. CEO John Ternus is reportedly pressuring software chief Craig Federighi to accelerate the Siri AI roadmap to match the capabilities of competitors like OpenAI.

For now, the focus remains on the “6-and-2” cycle to ensure the December 2026 milestones are met.

As Tim Cook transitions into his role as Executive Chairman, the success of Siri’s agentic evolution is being viewed as the first major test of the Ternus era. Whether Apple can bridge the technical gap between Siri and the cloud-native instances used by OpenAI’s Dots remains the central question for the iPhone 17 and 18 product cycles.
