A magnitude 5.8 earthquake strikes northern Afghanistan, causing strong tremors

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck the Hindu Kish region of northern Afghanistan on Thursday, causing strong tremors felt in parts of the country, including the capital, Kabul, according to officials and witnesses.

The German Research Center said the quake occurred at a depth of 189 kilometers.

As residents of Islamabad and parts of northwestern Pakistan and New Delhi felt the quake strongly, witnesses told Reuters in those areas.

About 30-40 seconds

For his part, regional official Moezuddin Ahmadi told Reuters that the tremors were “very strong” near the epicenter in the northern province of Badakhshan, and that authorities were investigating whether they caused damage or injuries.

In turn, Ashraf Nael, 28, from Faizabad city in Badakhshan, said: “It was very strong. At first we didn’t leave, but then when the shaking became strong, we left the room.”

He added that “the shaking lasted about 30-40 seconds.”
