A magnitude 7.4 earthquake hits southern Turkey

An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck Kahramanmaraş province in southern Turkey early today. The Turkish Emergency and Disaster Management Authority (AFAD) said the quake hit the Pazardik region at a depth of 7 kilometers below the earth’s surface.

Rescue teams rushed into thearea where the shock occurred.

Turkey sits on a deep seismic fault line and has seen a large number of earthquakes over the past four decades, including one near Istanbul in 1999, killing more than 17,000 people and injuring an estimated 45,000.
