The Sudan Tribune newspaper reported that a Sudanese farmer was killed by Ethiopian gunmen on Wednesday, in an attack on the border in the east of the country.
The newspaper cited sources it described as “reliable” that Ethiopian gunmen penetrated 10 kilometers into Sudanese territory in the Atreb border area of Basanda locality in Gedaref state.
The newspaper indicated that the prosecutor’s office handed over the body of the deceased to his family.
The border problems represent an acute crisis between Sudan and Ethiopia.
Last October, Addis Ababa announced that the intelligence service had reached an agreement with its Sudanese counterpart on enhancing border security and cooperation, during a visit by a Sudanese delegation led by the director general of the Sudanese intelligence service, Ahmed Mufaddal.
Ethiopian Intelligence Director-General Temesgen Troneh said the two agencies would cooperate to reduce the effects of cross-border crimes, illegal funds and human trafficking by building capacity and exchanging information.
