African Confederation Cup: match Egyptian-Moroccan after a close draw

Cairo: Monday’s African Football Confederation Cup draw did not spare newcomer Future Al-Masry, who pitted him against compatriot Pyramids in Group C and the Royal Moroccan Army, aspiring to keep the Moroccan title for the fourth consecutive season, in absence of Nahdet Berkane, defending champion. The orange team, who have won their second continental title twice in the last three seasons, had failed to qualify for the group stage, after falling to Tunisian Union of Monastir, losing the first leg (0-1), then drawing with a negative result, and this exclusion caused Algerian manager Abdel Haq Ben Sheikha to be sent off in following. The third fiery group, alongside Pyramids, Future and Royal Army, included 2005 champion, Togolese Askou Kara. The lottery that took place in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, where the Confederation of the Continental Union (CAF) is based, produced a second Arab clash in the first group, in what included the Union of the Algerian capital with the Libyan Greens, together with Marumo Gallants of South Africa and Saint-Iloa Lupopo of the Congolese. The task of the Monastir Union in the fourth group will be difficult in a strong group that includes Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and two-time champion in tenure (2016 and 2017) with Young Africans from Tanzania and Real Bamako from Mali. While the second group included ASEC Mimosas from Côte d’Ivoire, Rivers United from Nigeria, Diable Noir from Congo and Motema Pembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The group stage will kick off on February 10th, and the champion will receive $2 million instead of $1.5 million, with a 30% increase for runners-up and losing teams in semi-final and those qualified for the quarter-finals. Here are the draw results: Group A: USM (Algeria), Marumo Gallants (South Africa), Al Akhdar (Libya), Saint-Ailoa Lupopo (DRC). Group B: ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast), Diable Noir (Congo), Rivers United (Nigeria), Motema Pembe (DRC). Group C: Pyramids (Egypt), Asco Kara (Togo), Future (Egypt), Royal Army (Morocco). Group D: Mazembe (DRC), Union Monastir (Tunisia), Young Africans (Tanzania), Real Bamako (Mali). (AFP)
