After ‘positive talks’, farmers say Karnal standoff could end | Latest news India

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Friday said the third round of talk with the district administration of Karnal over the police action of August 28 on farmers concluded: on on a “positive” note and hinted that the ongoing stalemate could end by Saturday.

The SKM is a platform of farmers unions die lead the protests against the agricultural laws since November last year.

Haryana extra chef secretary Devender Singh, who chaired over the meeting, also said the conversations with farmers turned out to be positive and that another meeting was planned for the weekend.

The development comes at a time when farmers are indefinitely protesting the main-Entrance of Karnal’s mini secretariat since September 7th against the police action last month.

Several protesters were met a lathicharged on the way to Karnal to protest against a meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on August 28. About 10 farmers were injured in the incident.

Shortly after, a video surfaced in which IAS officer Ayush Sinha reportedly ordered police officers to “break heads” of the growers if they have broken the safety cordon during the BJP meeting.

The farmers have requested, among other things, suspension and registration of a FIR against sinha, who was later transferred out of Karnal and posted as extra secretary of Civilian Resources Department (CRID).

At Friday’s meeting, the government assured to take action against the IAS officer, according to people known with the development.

The farmers also requested compensation of 25 lakh and a government job for the relatives of farmer Sushil Kajal, who they claimed to have died as a result of police action, and financial assistance of 2 lakh each to the injured farmers in addition to free treatment in government hospitals.

Charuni said the farmers will have a discussion with other senior SKM leaders on Friday night and all issues will likely be resolved at Saturday’s meeting.

After two meetings with the protesters failed, the state government had Singh. sent for talk with a 13-member delegation of farmers led by Charuni on Friday.

The SKM had convened a meeting of all senior leaders at Karnal on September 11 at a ‘big decision’ if their demands were not met.

“Because the conversations were positive, decision over the meeting of SKM for follow-up course of action will be taken on Saturday morning,” said Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni) spokesman Rakesh Bains.
