After the Morocco-Belgium match… violence broke out in Brussels

Violence erupted in Brussels on Sunday as dozens attacked public property and security personnel following Morocco’s World Cup victory over Belgium in Qatar, police said.

And the police said in a statement that even before the end of the match, “dozens of people, some of whom were wearing headscarves, tried to confront the police” in the city centre, “which disturbed public safety”.

He added that explosives and projectiles were used, while some armed themselves with sticks, others set fire to the public road and destroyed a traffic light.

The police explained that “a journalist was wounded in the face with explosives” and his agents intervened with water cannons and tear gas.

About 100 security personnel dealt with the incidents and some of them were injured by bullets during the intervention.

Police have told residents and fans to avoid certain areas of the city center and have closed tube stations and roads to ease congestion.

“I strongly condemn the events that took place this afternoon,” Brussels Mayor Philippe Close said on Twitter.

“Police have ordered administrative arrests against the rioters,” Close said.
