In a significant leap for space technology, China’s Tiangong space station has welcomed Wukong AI, an advanced AI chatbot designed to assist taikonauts in navigation and tactical planning. Named after Sun Wukong, the protagonist from the classic Chinese tale “Journey to the West,” this chatbot symbolizes adaptability and intelligence. Introduced mid-July, it has already proven its utility by supporting a recent spacewalk, demonstrating its potential in human space missions.

What Is Wukong AI and How Does It Work?

Wukong AI is built upon a domestic open-source AI model, fine-tuned specifically for the complexities of manned space operations. As Zou Pengfei from the taikonaut training center noted, this system enhances operational efficiency and offers innovative solutions during critical tasks. The AI has access to a vast database of aerospace flight data, enabling it to provide rapid support in various scenarios.

The system consists of two interconnected modules—one stationed in the spacecraft and another on Earth. While the ground-based module performs in-depth analyses, the onboard module focuses on immediate challenges faced by the crew. This dual-setup enables a seamless exchange of information and contextually relevant assistance, adapting to the demands of each mission.

Wukong AI’s debut involved assisting taikonauts in a six-and-a-half-hour mission where they installed space debris protection devices and conducted routine inspections. The feedback from the crew has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the AI’s ability to deliver comprehensive content tailored to their needs. Although Wukong AI isn’t the first AI initiative in space—its predecessors include the International Space Station’s CIMON and Astrobee—its unique focus on navigation makes it particularly noteworthy.
