America’s biggest fires out of control

On Friday, New Mexico firefighters failed to control the largest fire in the United States that is raging dangerously near a string of mountain villages.

Scientists say the fire is the most destructive of dozens in the southwestern United States.

Thousands of people in Mora Valley, about 40 miles northeast of Santa Fe, are preparing to evacuate.

Winds from the south are expected on Saturday, firefighters said, pushing the fires in villages such as Mora and Las Vegas, which has a population of 14,000.

Fire expert Stuart Turner said a severe 20-year drought transformed forested mountains and valleys in a powder keg.
