- In a story set before the events of Static: Shadows of Dakota, the Static Shock animated series fan-favorite African superhero Anansi pays a visit to Dakota City, investigating a supernatural disturbance…but he’s going to need Static’s help to explore the occult side of the Milestone Universe!
Anansi the Spider, a character originating from the fan-favorite Static Shock animated series, makes his comic book debut in DC and Milestone’s Static Team-Up: Anansi #1.
DC has released an official preview for the Static Team-Up one-shot, which is set to hit comic shops this coming Tuesday, June 13. The preview wastes no time in introducing Anansi, officially bringing the African superhero to DC’s Milestone Universe (i.e. Earth-M). Set before the events of the ongoing Static: Shadows of Dakota series, the one-shot sees Anansi travel to Dakota City, where he enlists Virgil Hawkins/Static’s help in investigating a supernatural disturbance. This inverts the characters’ first animated interaction, in which Dakota native Virgil met Anansi while vacationing in Ghana.
Static’s Adventures on Earth-M Continue
DC officially launched the new Milestone Universe in 2020. The following year, Static, the imprint’s flagship hero, got a new six-issue series, titled Static: Season One. A follow-up series, Shadows of Dakota, launched this past February. Shadows of Dakota #4 hit shelves last month, with issue #5 set to arrive next month on July 4. The series is slated to run for seven issues in total. Of course, Anansi is not the first animated Static Shock character to debut in comics via Earth-M. The villainous Ivan Evans/Ebon made the jump in the final issue of Static: Season One before becoming a more prominent figure in Shadows of Dakota.
Based on the original Static comics published by DC and Milestone in the ’90s, Static Shock aired on Kids’ WB for four seasons from 2000 to 2004 as part of the DC Animated Universe. Based on the Akan folktale character of the same name, Anansi made his debut in the Static Shock Season 3 episode “Static in Africa” in February 2003. He later appeared in the Season 4 episode “Out of Africa” in January 2004. Anansi was voiced by Carl Lumbly, who is also known for voicing the DCAU’s J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter.
Written by Evan Narcisse and illustrated by Charles Stewart III, Static Team-Up: Anansi #1 goes on sale June 13 from DC.
