Anne Nolan talks turning off windscreen wipers in lashing rain as she didn't want to live

Singer Anne Nolan has bravely revealed that following the end of her marriage to husband Brian Wilson, she contemplated ending her own life. The 70-year-old star was told last year that she was all clear of cancer, after being diagnosed with the disease twice.

I turned off my windscreen wipers because I just didn’t want to live any more.

Anne Nolan

Anne shot to fame in 1970s as part of the original line up of singing sensations, The Nolan Sisters, before departing the band in 1980, alongside sisters Maureen, Bernie and Denise.

The singer-turned-actress was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001 and was later diagnosed yet again in 2020, with sister Linda also being diagnosed.

While younger sisters Linda and Coleen have spoken openly about their battles with mental health, Anne opted to keep her life away from the dazzling lights of showbusiness to herself.

However, she has now revealed that following the breakdown of her marriage with ex-husband Brian Wilson in 2007, the Irish born star has bravely shared that she contemplated taking her life.

Anne revealed that when her relationship with Brian came to an end, she was in a dark place.

“I wanted my life to end,” she said.

The singer went on to say that she had no choice when Brian filed for divorce.

She continued: “It wasn’t my choice for Brian to divorce me and I remember I went out in the car once at 4am, it was lashing with rain and I turned off my windscreen wipers because I just didn’t want to live any more.

“But I only had them off for about ten seconds, then I turned them on again,” she told OK! Magazine.

When asked whether she had been driving at the time, she said: “While I was driving, yeah, I never did anything like that again, I knew I was going to be ok.”

Anne painfully recalled how she missed her ex-husband during her second cancer battle.

“He wasn’t there because we’re divorced, but I still missed him because it was the first time I’d had cancer with nobody there to hug me,” she revealed.

Younger sister, Linda, 62, who is battling incurable cancer also told of how she became suicidal after her beloved husband Brian Hudson died in 2007.

Linda had been with Brian since the pair first met in 1979, with them eventually tying the knot in 1981 with the couple going on to have a 26-year marriage.

The blonde star recalled being seen by “two big burly men” who were mental health nurses, adding that if her appointment hadn’t have gone well, she would have been “carted off”.

Speaking of her darker days, Linda said: “I’d written goodbye letters to all the girls, saying, ‘Dear all go you, I know you will understand…'”.

In an extract of their book, Stronger Together, Linda noted that shortly after speaking to her sister Maureen, following Anne’s diagnosis in 2020, “things really went crazy”.

“Just as I was coming to terms with Anne’s devastating news, 30 minutes later my doctor’s secretary from Blackpool Victoria Hospital called,” she wrote.

Linda continued: “With my cancer metastasising [spreading] in my hip three years prior, I was given quarterly scans from my thorax down to my pelvis.

“I was told: ‘Mr Danwata saw something on your CT scan on your liver.’

“If my heart was already jittery, it literally missed a beat during that call. I couldn’t tell my family when we were dealing with Anne’s diagnosis.”

Her secondary cancer had spread from her breast to her hip, as well as her liver, meaning she had to undergo palliative chemotherapy to prolong her life.

“Mr Danwata explained the cancer was not curable, they’re just keeping it at bay until they can’t. He gave me the paperwork saying ‘palliative chemo’,” she added.
