Apple confirms that iPhone 14 buyers will have serious new problems

It’s been a rough start for people who bought an iPhone 14. Yesterday, Apple released iOS 16.0.1 to fix problems with moving data, getting permission, and taking photos. Today, the company said that iMessage and FaceTime are still having problems.

In a new support document, Apple also said that “iMessage and FaceTime may not finish activating on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro” and that problems may still happen even after updating to iOS 16.0.1.

Apple lists the problems and says, “After setting up your iPhone, you might have one or more of the following problems:

  • You can’t get FaceTime calls or iMessages.
  • When you send a message to another Apple device, the message bubble is green instead of blue.
  • In Messages, conversations are shown as two different threads instead of one.
  • People who get your messages will see that they came from the wrong account, like your email address, if you chose your phone number.

Even though the problems are clear, the solution is not. Apple’s support document says that users should update to iOS 16.0.1 “to fix this.” However, these bugs aren’t listed in the iOS 16.0.1 release notes, and if you’re “still having problems” after updating, Apple suggests taking steps to back up your phone. These things:

  • Tap “Cellular” in the Setting app. Check to see if your phone line is on. If your phone has more than one SIM card, make sure the one you want to use is selected and turned on.
  • Tap the “Messages” button in the Settings app. Then click “Send and Receive.”
  • Tap the number you’d like to use with Messages.
  • Back in the Settings app, tap the “FaceTime” button.
  • Tap the phone number you want to use with FaceTime.
