Apple Unveils Its First AR/VR Headset, The Apple Vision Pro

Apple’s Apple Vision AR/VR headset, now known as Apple Vision Pro, was eventually unveiled during the company’s keynote presentation at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on Monday. The Apple Vision Pro, a piece of hardware developed specifically with gamers in mind, is entering a market in which it will compete with other options, including Meta’s Quest headsets, Sony’s PlayStation VR 2, Valve’s Index, and others.

Those anticipating an Apple headset designed just for gaming will be disappointed to learn this is not the case. According to the launch, Apple Vision Pro is being pitched largely as an augmented reality gadget with virtual reality capabilities.

“In the same way that Mac introduced us to personal computing and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro will introduce us to spatial computing,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said when announcing the device during the conference. Cook was speaking in the context of the conference where he was unveiling the device. “We are now embarking on a journey that will usher in a new era of powerful personal technology,” the speaker said. “This event marks the beginning of that journey.”

You can perform various productive tasks, such as opening apps, checking notifications, navigating emails and websites, and more when you use the headset. A user was shown using augmented reality on their MacBook during the presentation. Additionally, it was demonstrated playing NBA 2K via Apple Arcade with support for game controllers. Apple has stated that “hundreds” of games will be available on the very first day.

A relationship with Unity that would enable Unity apps to function within its new Vision operating system was the only thing that was announced regarding its features for gaming. Other than that, only a few things were mentioned. In addition to this, an all-new app store designed just for the headgear is about to go live.

The launch year for the headset is 2024, and it will have a beginning retail price of $3,499.
