Armenia and Azerbaijan agree ceasefire after border conflict, Armenian Defense Ministry says

Armenia had asked Moscow for help defend it after the worst battles since a 44 Day War last year between ethnic Armenian troops and the Azeri army over the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave that killed at least 6,500 people people.

That conflict ended after Russia, which military base in Armenia, brokered a peace deal and deployed nearly 2,000 peacekeepers in on the region. Turkey took the side of Azerbaijan, regaining that parts of country lost it in a previous conflict.

“Corresponding with an agreement brokered by the Russian side, fire held up on the eastern part of the Armenian-Azeri border, and the situation is relatively stable,” said the Armenian Defense Ministry.

The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan did not immediately do this reply at the request of Reuters for comment.

earlier on On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan discussed the situation on the border by phone, the Kremlin said.

The Russian minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu also spoken by phone met the Armenian and Azeri defense ministers by telephone, Interfax news agency said.

Armenian Defense Ministry said its troops had perished fire from Azerbaijan and die 12 of to be soldiers were captured, while two combat positions near the border with Azerbaijan lost.

Edward Aghajanian, head of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Armenian Parliament said 15 Armenian soldiers had been murdered.

The Azerbaijani defense ministry said it had responded to large-scale “provocations” after Armenian forces fired on Azeri army positions, and that its own operation had been successful.

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs had said it was bad concerned over the deteriorating situation and called on both countries to respect a ceasefire.
