Armenia and Azerbaijan commercial charges of cross-border shootings

Today, Sunday, Armenia and Azerbaijan had a firefight on the border near the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which last year saw a war between the two Caucasus countries.

And the Armenian Defense Ministry announced on Sunday in a statement that “units of the Azerbaijani armed forces have tried to launch an attack in the eastern direction of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. A heavy firefight has begun.”

The ministry confirmed that it had “rejected the enemy’s attempts to position itself in the region”, as it said, but acknowledged that “the situation is still tense”.

For its part, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry announced Saturday-Sunday night that the Armenian army conducted “regular and unreasonable massive shots” in several Azerbaijani sites, including the Kalbajar district, which Baku regained control in 2020 after being under the control of Armenia for nearly three decades.

The Azerbaijani ministry confirmed that it had “taken appropriate measures to put an end to the provocations”. Neither side reported any casualties.

Nagorno-Karabakh authorities announced on Saturday that the only road connecting Armenia to the secessionist enclave in the Lachin Corridor was closed for a short time due to an incident between the two sides.

Armenia and Azerbaijan fought a brief war, which resulted in 6,000 deaths, in the fall of 2020 in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which had already witnessed a bloody war in the 1990s.

Last year’s conflict ended with the defeat of Armenia, which was forced to surrender several areas as a shield around the secessionist enclave.

Despite the signing of a ceasefire agreement and the deployment of forces of pace tensions between the two former Soviet republics remain high.

The two sides also regularly talk about outbreaks of violence and casualties among soldiers.
