At least 5 people died in an explosion in northern Afghanistan

Afghan police said on Tuesday that at least five people had died in an explosion occurred in a vehicle carrying employees of an oil company in northern Afghanistan.

“An explosion occurred today in … Balkh on a bus belonging to employees of the oil company,” said Mohammad Asif Waziri, a police spokesman in the northern province of Balkh, adding that at least four people were injured in the blast.

It is not yet clear who is behind the explosion. In recent months there have been several attacks in urban centers in Afghanistan, some of which are claimed by Isis.

A few days ago, three gunmen attacked the headquarters of the Islamic Party, led by veteran politician Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, and tried to storm it after detonating a car bomb near it.

Two of the attackers were killed as they attempted to storm the Kabul headquarters, which also includes a mosque, while a third managed to escape.

Officials said Hekmatyar, who served as prime minister in the 1990s, was inside the compound but was unharmed.
