Avengers 5: Loki and Doctor Strange 2 writer on if Secret Wars is coming to MCU – WATCH

This week the third MCU show Loki starts streaming on Disney+, following in the footsteps of WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. The new miniseries follows a variant of Loki from 2012, who escaped with the Tesseract during the Time Heist in Avengers Endgame. However, he’s soon captured by the Time Variance Authority and prosecuted for diverting from the Sacred Timeline.

Loki’s head writer is Michael Waldron, who started his career on Rick and Morty and Community and has since been hired to pen the 2022 MCU movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Whatever happens in Loki, it’s clear that the time travel storyline will have an impact on the MCU going forwards, especially as Marvel boss Kevin Feige has confirmed that they will be exploring alternate realities post-Endgame.

Now in a new interview promoting Loki, Waldron was asked about the TVA’s introductory video that apparently features in the first episode.

Charles Murphy of Murphy’s Multiverse said to the screenwriter: “It mentions a previous multiversal war and it says that the nexus events could lead us to another multiversal war.”

Murphy added: “And we know we’re getting some more multiverse stuff in Doctor Strange.

“Is that maybe the first hint for a set up of something like Secret Wars in the MCU or is that just in there?”

In the 2015 Marvel Comics run of Secret Wars, the Marvel multiverse collided on Battleworld.

There, multiple versions of the same Marvel characters existed simultaneously, so perhaps this is what Avengers 5 will be inspired by?

Answering Murphy’s question as to whether or not Loki and Doctor Strange 2 will set up Secret Wars, Waldron played it coy but didn’t exactly say no.

The screenwriter replied: “We’ll see. You’ll probably know, as well as I do, not everything is just in there.

“If the purpose of that whole thing was just indoctrinate the audience and everything…and yeah, we’ll see how this plays out in the MCU moving forward.”

Secret Wars or not, it seems likely that the franchise will be seeing alternate realities collide with some of the time travel and multiverse mayhem to come.

In fact, there have been rumours aplenty that this year’s Spider-Man No Way Home will see Tom Holland’s Peter Parker team up with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s alternate incarnations.

Not only that but previous Sony Spider-Man villains are rumoured to feature in a Sinister Six, with Alfred Molina already admitting that his Doc Ock is in the movie.

While Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme also appears in Spider-Man No Way Home as a mentor to Holland’s Spidey.

Interestingly, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is released in cinemas just three months later and is directed by Sam Raimi who helmed the Maguire Spider-Man trilogy.

Aside from three Spider-Mans potentially colliding, the Loki show is rumoured to feature alternate versions of the God of Mischief. Over the last few weeks, some fans have been theorising that there will be a Lady Loki included in the show, while others are convinced that cast member Richard E Grant must be playing an older version of Hiddleston’s character.

Then there’s Thor Love and Thunder which has at least two versions of the Asgardian god, with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster becoming The Mighty Thor. On top of that, the Taika Waititi film’s villain is Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher who famously took on three versions of Thor at once in the comics.

And if that weren’t enough, 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is introducing the comics’ time-travelling villain Kang the Conqueror, who will no doubt cause even more mayhem. It may not be confirmed, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Secret Wars is where Avengers 5 will be heading – in a storyline that could well begin with Loki.

Loki begins streaming on Disney on Wednesday.
