Bank of Lebanon employees refuse to hand over personal data for criminal checks

The Lebanese central bank employee union said Wednesday it would not hand over personal data to restructuring consultancy Alvarez & Marsal, which could further disrupt attempts to conduct a criminal investigation.

The union said in a note that “declares its refusal to provide those responsible for financial verifications or criminal investigations with the names and ranks of current and former employees of the Banque du Liban and the movement of their bank accounts that fall within the scope of the law personal data protected “.

Alvarez & Marsal withdrew from the criminal audit in November 2020, claiming they did not receive the necessary information from the central bank, but 11 months later they agreed to appeal.

The Banque du Liban said in November that it had held a virtual meeting with Alvarez & Marcel and would continue to cooperate fully to complete the criminal audit, a condition for Lebanon to receive foreign aid to help it recover from a financial meltdown.
